There are a few different rumors as to how Mary Esther, FL received its name. One story claims that the city was named after Reverend John Newton's wife. Newton was known as both a minister and teacher, and is credited with establishing Mary Esther's first school and post office. A second story says that the city's name is a combination of Newton's two daughters names. But a third version of the story claims that the city is really a combination of both Newton's wife and daughters. It is widely believed that the second version is true, and Mary Esther is named after the daughters of John Newton.
